He’s here

Oliver and me

Oliver William made his unexpected but much celebrated debut at 9:57 p.m. on Sunday, April 12!

At 3 lbs., 9 oz., he is our tiny and precious little one. Though he was eight weeks early, Ollie is already a fighter who amazes us every day. He is being well taken care of until he’s ready to come home with us, and we hope fervently that moment is coming soon.

Having a baby is a beautiful, life-shattering thing . . . and having to go home while our little one remains in the NICU has been one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. I don’t know how we would have survived the last week without our families, and I definitely could not have survived any of this without Spencer. He held me up — literally. In every way possible.

I’ll share his birth story in the weeks to come . . . likely when I’ve had more time to process it all, and hopefully when we’re able to hold him constantly in our arms. In the meantime, you’ll likely see radio static here. I have a million things to say but no idea how to say them, but I know I’ll need to find a way as we press on.

‘Til then, we’ll be daydreaming and driving up to see our little love. We already know the roads by heart.

  2. Sending much love and congratulations to you!

Also, my sister had her baby five weeks early, and she spent a few weeks in the NICU. Those nurses truly are the best!

  3. Congratulations! Our twins were early and weighed under 4 pounds when they were born. They stayed in the NICU for a couple of weeks until they gained weight. It was so hard to leave them every day. I hope he’s home soon with you! Take care of yourself!

  4. Prayers. All things happen for a reason. Congratulations on the birth of your son. You will be tucking him in with stories and giggles soon. And it will seem time flew even faster as you watch him accept his high school diploma

  5. Praying about his stay and your stressed heart! I can’t imagine…but I know one thing, that little man is just “stinkin’ cute” :). The pic is so peaceful; a picture of sweet motherhood. Sigh! Beautiful. Take it all in and release it when you need to. *waiting here to read an update*

  6. In my country, Vietnam, the best wish in this case to you and your baby is “round mother and square son (MαΊΉ trΓ²n, con vuΓ΄ng). Round mean the heaven, square mean the earth and both mean the miracle of god πŸ™‚ Best wish to you and your angel baby!

  9. Congrats! I can only imagine how hard it is to be without him. When my son was born on October 23rd 2013 I still remember the fear that I would have to leave without him when my insurance only covered two days of stay. Thank God I didn’t have to and my prayers are with you for peace and strength. I’m so happy he is healthy! Love the name. Little Olle was born on my birthday too so I’m sorta his 27 year old twin, bahaha πŸ™‚

  10. I’m a longtime lurker but had to comment. Goodness! And congratulations! Sending prayers and best wishes for Oliver’s health and wellbeing, as well as yours and Spence’s. My son had his first child last year, and he’s also Oliver, so your precious little one will likely come to mind when I think of my Ollie as you get through these first few months!

  15. Congratulations!! As a former preemie mom myself, I know this is most definitely NOT how you expected your parenthood journey to begin, but hey – when it comes to parenthood, really nothing goes the way you plan. My 33 weekers will be 10 this weekend, and they are strong, healthy, smart, gorgeous and hilarious (shall I go on? πŸ˜‰ I’m certain the same will be true of Oliver. Just hold on as best you can through the coming weeks – before you know it, he’ll be home in your arms and THAT will be a day more amazing and terrifying than you can imagine.

  18. I developed preeclampsia and had a 2 lb 6 oz’er 26 years ago. Just looking at your picture tells me how much better things are in the NICU these days because they sure didn’t let me cuddle my little fella like that the first week! Many congratulations, keep your strength up, things will get better as soon as he gets to come home.

  19. Congratulations! He is precious and beautiful! My little guy was 4 weeks early and had to spend some time in NICU as well. It really is so difficult to go home each night without the little one you carried with you for so long, BUT he is in incredible hands AND soon he’ll be with you and you’ll be inseparable! Many prayers and well wishes being sent your way!
