It’s a . . .

If you’ve popped by my Instagram lately, you know the answer to this most life-changing of questions. Regardless, I love a little fanfare . . . and who doesn’t love a good party?!

After Baby J was resolutely uncooperative at our first ultrasound, we had to reschedule the get-together we’d planned with our families. I’d ordered a cake from a friend so we could cut in and all be surprised together, which had to be delayed with a few frantic text messages.

Disappointed, we went for an additional elective ultrasound last Wednesday — and got a bouncier baby this time! Our ultrasound technician said she could tell “right away,” and we had our answer — now sealed in an envelope — to deliver to the baker.

We got together with our parents, grandparents, siblings and aunts — some through the magic of FaceTime! — last Friday to finally learn whether we were expecting a boy or girl. Though Spence and I were both genuinely excited at the idea of either sex, I’ve had a hunch from the very beginning that we would be welcoming a little guy.

And . . .

I was totally right!

Unlike the last time Spence and I cut a cake together (our wedding day), my hands were trembling like crazy. I actually felt a little faint as we prepared to slice in . . . only because I knew that we would forever remember this moment. That it changed everything.

Having a boy will be such a grand adventure. I’d be lying if I said I’m not a little nervous, only because I have so little experience with kids in general . . . and boys in particular. I am one of two girls; my mom is one of two girls; her mom is one of two girls . . . for as far back as I can remember, we’ve had ladies in our family. Though my dad’s side has many little gentlemen running around, my mom’s side has been resolutely female for decades.

And here comes our guy, busting out his power tools and race cars and monsters.

Because I’ve felt from the beginning that he is a he, I wasn’t surprised — but it’s one thing to suspect something and, you know, something else entirely to know it. If we’d cut in to see pink inside, I think I would have actually been shocked. Mother’s intuition?

I have so much to learn — about babies in general, of course, and little guys in particular. But I’m so excited for my husband to have a buddy in all his experiments and home projects, me to have a young reader (already building his library!), our dads to have a grandson and for both of our families to have a little one to love.

Boy, oh boy!

  1. Congratulations! 😀
I knew immediatey that my daughter was a girl, and I didn’t get to find out if I was right until she was born. Sometimes there are things you just *know*!

  2. Congratulations! Little boys are so much fun. I have two of them. 🙂 I think the mother’s intuition thing is real. I was sure I was having boys both times as well. Have fun preparing for your little guy!

  3. Yay! Congrats! I happen to think little boys are the best…they are wayyyyy more energetic than girls at the toddler age (the comparisons are hilarious at the park or on a play date. I’m running around like a crazy person chasing after him…), but from what I hear, we will be smooth sailing in high school. 🙂 Congrats again! Have so much fun building his library!

  4. I love this idea and am so glad you were able to share this with us. Boys are the best. Little boys’ clothes are to die for. I miss being able to dress my son is the most adorable outfits. Enjoy every minute of it and have fun building that library!

  5. Congrats! Boys are much more aggressive and louder than girls but it is so much fun. My 15 month old son keeps me laughing and is such a sweetheart. Enjoy every moment because they grow so fast.

  6. OMGosh congrats! My son is 15 months now and the center of my world. Don’t let “inexperience” scare you. It’s love that matters 🙂 I’m so excited for you. Tip: don’t spend a ton on toys just yet. My son still play with dog toys and tupperware. And invest in a VERY comfortable rocking chair… you will spend a lot of time in it. I spent many hours rocking my son back to sleep and sleeping myself in our rocking chair. Congrats!

  7. This is one of the most creative revelations I’ve ever come across. Congratulations on the lil man! My parents were hoping for more diversity, but they ended up with four girls and one boy. Teehee.

  8. I was so excited to see the cake on FB! As I said, boys have a special relationship with their mommas. It is hard to even describe and annoys the hell out of my daughter. (Although she and I do love a good shopping day or pedicures.) If it makes you feel any better, I had no baby experience at all, and especially none with a boy before we had kids. Even my mom was complaining that she didn’t know what to do with one. We figured it out! Now you can start decorating.

  9. Hooray! I was convinced I was having a girl until our ultrasound, so it took me a few days to come around to the idea, but now I can’t imagine anything else (not that he’s masculine at all at 5 months of age.) But I do notice myself observing teenage boys and girls differently now. And every few weeks when watching a movie or a tv show, Mike or I will lean over to the other and say, “Oh my gosh. I am so glad we didn’t have a girl.”

  10. Congratulations! I had three girls before I got my little man…not so little any more, he’s 14 now and quite a bit taller than me. My advice: snuggle him all you can as long as you can! Eventually, as those preteen hormones start kicking in, they don’t care to snuggle with mama so much. Occasionally, yes, but not like those “little man cuddles.” SO MUCH FUN headed your way! Enjoy!

  11. Congrats! I had a similar experience with my last couple ultrasounds, my doc says its a good thing that he is moving so much he frustrates the techs. We did cupcakes for my in-laws and called my family immediately. I was planning on sending my mom a box of the appropriate colored yarn for her to start knitting things up but couldn’t wait. Boys are fun!!!

  12. So excited for you! I had the exact same intuition. I told everyone I knew I was having a boy and I was right. Isn’t mother’s intuition crazy?! Can’t wait to see what you do with his nursery!

  13. Congratulations! Boys are tons of fun. When they are older, you can leave them in the yard and it would have been tilled ready for planting. Put them in the bath and you’ll have an instant ocean in no time at all. Just ask my wife. Still, our adventures with our little one are treasures that will be cherished forever. Keep on making those memories! Cheers!

  15. Oh and I started reading to my girls while I was pregnant with both of them. They are both bookworms. My youngest reads at two-and-a-half years ahead of her grade level.

  16. I admit I wanted at least one girl, so when our first were twin girls, it was fun, but second time around we all wanted a boy. Nick has always had a special place in my heart, I worried about the boy thing too,but we grew together and it was magical. Now you can decorate and pick names and all the other fun stuff. xoxo
