Settled-ish

Morning light from our window

Well, friends, we made it. It wasn’t pretty — and frequently sucked, in fact — but we’re reasonably settled-ish into the new house and I am relieved. I think.

I mean, there’s stuff everywhere. I can’t find anything. My clothes are all in trash bags, and a fine layer of dust from the plank floors upstairs covers my feet constantly. I’m bone tired and bedraggled and ache all over, and some of my poor family members who helped are much worse off than me.

But we did it. We are moved.

(Mostly.)

(There are still things at the condo, but I’m trying not to worry about them. I mean, we’ll get them. This week. And the furniture is all moved, which is the most important stuff. So it’ll be okay. Right? Right.)

Posting will be light this week as we are without Internet for a bit, but I’ll return soon with updates and a little house tour — and hopefully be a little perkier! I am far from perky. I’m actually really disoriented and fighting this urge to want to “go home,” except home is not where it was.

But I’ll adjust. Just have to keep moving.

Good thing we unpacked the coffeepot first.

  1. I am RELIEVED for you! The whole thing sucks. No way around it. Just keep plugging. Set a goal of unpacking X number of boxes a day and eventually things will be in their place.

    • Thanks, Sandy! That’s a great idea: four or five boxes a night, and slowly things will come together. I plugged away and got quite a few things put in their new “homes” last evening, though there is so much more to do . . .

    • I’m the same way, Andi — love checking out other folks’ digs! I’ll be sure to have plenty to check out soon. 🙂 Thanks!

  2. You’ve just got to “love” your house into shape!
In spite of all the boxes, the only constant possession we all take from place to place is our memories. Take good care of your memories.

    • Very good point, Renee — and I love that we’re already making new memories in the new house. Still a little sad about our old space, but I’m adjusting.

    • Thanks! Moving has generally sucked, though I’m so thankful for all the assistance we’ve had. Unpacking is the next challenge . . .

  3. It’s been interesting reading your blog, because we’ve been living somewhat parallel life events for the last 2 years. I’m a good 10 years older than you, but I too, got married (a year ago today!) so went through the craziness that is planning a wedding. We bought a house (14 months ago, with 2 months to rehab before we could live there), and had to move me (dragging my feet the whole way) out of an apartment that I loved. I’ve been able to relate to your emotions and experiences like I never could have at another time in my life. You feel unsettled & overwhelmed now, but room by room, you’ll make it feel like home. I’d suggest picking one room to home-ify first – a room that will give you comfort. (for me, that was our bedroom). Then, when you feel overpowered by all the work that has to be done, at least you have one spot to escape to that feels sane & ordered. Good luck! You’re going to love it eventually!

    • Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, Mitzi! Love your idea about concentrating on one room to restore order and make it feel like home, and I can definitely see that being our bedroom. I’m concentrating on that nook of the house — the bedroom, master bathroom and master closet — so we have our clothes, etc., in some kind of shape. Just have to be ready for work.

Congrats on your recent anniversary — how funny that we’re in such similar places! The world really is a small place. I hope you’re feeling great about your new home, too. Thanks again.

  4. You’ve bought the ticket, you took the ride. Although exhausting, life is too short to not experience its splendors – including movement to a new vicinity.

    • I’m on the ride, all right! 🙂 New challenges definitely help us grow, and I know we’ll be so happy in this house. Just a matter of getting there. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Yay! for the coffee pot! I know about the “wanting to go home” feeling. Every time I have moved I have felt a similar urge, but it has passed, especially with the dogs present: If I am comfortable they are comfortable. Congratulations on the move and the new house. Can’t wait for the tour!

    • Glad to know this is only temporary, Henrietta. On my third morning in the house, I’m already finding I’m more comfortable and less anxious; everything is becoming a new normal. Trying to go easy on myself during the transition and know that everything will be all right. Thanks so much!

    • I hope so, Sarah! I already feel better just having 90% of our things in the same place, haha. It can only get better . . .

    • That’s a really good idea, Kathy — concentrating on getting one space ready before moving on. Right now I have a little bit done in, oh, every room of the house . . . which means each one is still a mess! I’m going to focus on getting our bedroom suite ready this week before moving on to anything else.

    • Thank you, Jennifer! We’ve been sleeping like logs. I really miss my reading these days, though . . . I can barely keep my eyes open for a few minutes before falling asleep each night.

  7. I always unpacked the kitchen first and made sure that was ready to go as it is the soul of my house and people always have to eat and drink. Then the bedrooms and so on. Your window view looks so peaceful 🙂 I can hear the wind in the trees 🙂

    • That’s an excellent idea! Our kitchen boxes were the first to be unpacked, and I think we have order mostly restored in there . . . for now, anyway. I’m sure we’ll wind up moving everything around eventually, but that’s all right. Thanks so much! The woods here are great. 🙂

  8. Good luck with the move and congrats on your new house! I know how stressful packing/unpacking can be. We just did it in October. I am thinking of you and take it one day at the time! BTW, I love your view!

    • Thanks so much, Christina! The packing/unpacking has been crazy, and you were doing it with a little one! :O One day at a time is an excellent motto. Can only take it evening by evening these days.

  9. Yes, the first thing to be unpacked should always be Mr. Coffee. I am so happy for you and that we were able to follow you through the process. Moving is exciting and a pain in the tushie all at the same time. It does help when you have someone to go through it with, that’s for sure.

  10. I moved a several times and, I am in that process at the moment, so I know how you feel. Moving is hard, especially leaving the old place and the memories back in the old place, but it’s important that you have them and that you are making new ones in your new home. Change is a part of our lives and it is good for us. Hope you’ll make new home out of your new house quickly:)

  11. So pleased you are at last ensconced even if your belongings will take time to find their own niche.
I hope you’ll be very happy here. Am sure you’ll make it yours very quickly.
I’m going to have a break from blogging, shall have my last post tomorrow, for a while at least.
Just wanted to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your posts and I admire your blog very much!

  12. I hope you’re settling in well; I need to be packing to move and keep putting it off. I find it so overwhelming! (Not helped that we’re juggling trying to buy and trying to rent, since we’re suddenly being kicked out of our apartment!) Hope the new home is just lovely!
