So this place was awesome.
En route to Yosemite National Park last year, we made a stop at Mono Lake: a large, shallow lake formed at least 760,000 years ago with no ocean outlet. Without a route to the sea, high levels of salt accumulate in the lake — and the water becomes alkaline. Brine shrimp and flies thrive in this unique environment.
It’s a lake, y’all. In a desert.
Though we didn’t have much time to explore, I would love to go back and see Mono Lake’s famed tufa towers. And then we can, um, “detour” over to Yosemite . . . because seriously, you can’t have too much Yosemite in your life.
For more Wordless Wednesday, pop over here and here!
Damn straight. We could have stayed at Yosemite forever. Years later, the kids would tell you it was their best vacation ever. But this lake…very surreal. Looks like you are the last person left on earth.

Can’t wait to take our kids there someday, Sandy! It was just magical. I could go on and on about it . . . and yes, this lake was so wild. I definitely felt like John Muir, alone and wandering in the foothills!

So beautiful. I always forget how many amazing things the US has to offer when I’m dreaming of going overseas some more, but maybe I should tackle some of the greats here first, and probably for less money!
