Are you ready to BAFAB?

buyafriendabook.comThursday is the first day of April — so you know what that means! It’s time for Buy A Friend A Book Week, which happens four times a year — the first weeks of January, April, July and October. In January I gifted my friend and coworker Sandy with Richard Yates’ Revolutionary Road, a book we’d both been talking about in preparation for seeing the film (which I never got around to doing, by the way).

This go ’round? I’m not quite sure yet. I haven’t chosen the “friend” in question, nor have I settled precisely on a title! I know one I would grab again for Sandy, but I have to spread the BAFAB love — and choose another lucky recipient. I’m narrowing the field as we speak, so everyone be nice to me — I don’t want to unceremoniously eliminate you!

It’s a great way to make people happy and spread our mutual love of literature! I know money is tight, but does anyone else have plans to participate this coming month?

  1. I had never heard of this before, but I think it’s such a great idea! I love giving books, I have to refrain myself from giving only books on Christmas and birthdays and other celebrations!

I think that even though money is tight, we can still afford to give books! A good way would be to give a copy of a book someone loved and that he-she has at home. Anyway, I’ll try to think quick so maybe I can participate, too!

  2. Thanks for reminding me, Meg! I will participate again…it’s a great way to spread the book love around!

  3. ahem…we’re friends, right? :D i’d love to read pretty much anything you send me. ahahah

  4. Thanks for the reminder. Now I’ve got an excuse to go shopping! :)

Oooh I hadn’t heard of BAFAB, what a lovely idea! Excellent excuse to go into a book shop too!

  6. I saw your Laurie Notaro recommendation on Book, Line, and Sinker, and you sold me. Which one should I read first?

    • Awesome! I think I would read through them chronologically — though they would still make sense if you didn’t, I think you’ll enjoy the cameos and general building of Notaro’s crazed adventures if you start at the beginning. Go for The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club, and follow it up with I Love Everybody (And Other Atrocious Lies)!

I’d never heard of this. What a neat idea.

  8. I was planning to buy my friend KittyB a book this weekend anyway…does that count?
